Our Story

RiverCity Barbell was founded in 2012 by Jim and Nicole Phillips and Zac Whalen.  Our original purpose was to provide a training facility for a small group of friends who were all competing in powerlifting.  Once we were up and running, we quickly realized that the demand for such a space extended beyond just active powerlifters, and included bodybuilders, crossfit athletes, olympic lifters, strongman, and anyone else who liked the idea of being part of a community based strength training facility.  Our journey has taken us from several locations, with us eventually ending in Dayton Kentucky.  We always joke that the gym operates like a giant bake sale - meaning that the membership dues pay for the space and the essential bills, and the powerlifting meets that we host act as our primary fundraiser to cover winter heating bills, equipment upkeep and additions, and any unexpected costs of running a business.   As a gym, RiverCity Barbell is proud to have 18 lifters who have achieved Elite totals, and 11 lifters who have totaled Pro in the sport of powerlifting.  We are also proud to have helped to form lifelong friendships, marriages, career changes, networking opportunities and countless hours of fun for our members.

Zac Whalen and Jim Phillips combine for over 3 decades of experience in the sport of powerlifting.  Zac Whalen was ranked in the top 10 nationally 5 years straight in the 220lb weight class.  His best lifts in competition are 870 Squat, 635 Bench Press, and 690 Deadlift and 3 lift total of 2175.  Jim Phillips best lifts in competition were 950 Squat, 775 Bench Press, and 675 Deadlift for a 2325 total.  His bench press is ranked in the Top 50 all-time nationally.  Sadly, Jim passed away in 2022, but his spirit lives on inside the gym.

Nicole Phillips is the force behind the scenes that keeps the gym running.  If you've reached out to us via email or Facebook, she is the voice of the gym that responds.  She handles all of the membership plans, the day pass requests, and the vast majority of the administration behind the scenes.  You'll also see Nicole front and center at the check in table on meet day.

To make the gym board, you must be an active member, and compete in any sanctioned powerlifting meet nationally.
